Das FitzHugh-Nagumo-Modell (nach Richard FitzHugh (1922β2007)cite-ref-1[1] und J. Nagumo, die das Modell unabhΓ€ngig voneinander entwickelten) beschreibt einen Prototyp eines anregbaren Systems, zum Beispiel eines Neurons oder Axons. Wenn die Γ€uΓere Anregung I e x t {\displaystyle I_{\rm {ext}}} einen Schwellenwert ΓΌberschreitet, fΓΌhrt das System eine charakteristische Exkursion im ( v , w ) {\displaystyle (v,w)} -Phasenraum aus, bevor die Variablen v {\displaystyle v} und w {\displaystyle w} zu ihren Ruhewerten ( v 0 , w 0 ) {\displaystyle (v_{0},w_{0})} zurΓΌckkehren. Dieses Verhalten ist modellhaft fΓΌr die Generation von Spikes (=kurzzeitige ErhΓΆhung der Membranspannung v {\displaystyle v} ) in einem Neuron nach Stimulation durch einen externen Strom I e x t {\displaystyle I_{\rm {ext}}} .

Das FitzHugh-Nagumo-Modell, welches detailliert die Aktivierungs- und Deaktivierungsdynamik in einem spikenden Neuron abbildet, ist eine vereinfachte Version des Hodgkin-Huxley-Modell. In den Original-Artikeln von FitzHugh wird dies Modell auch als Bonhoeffer-van-der-Pol-Oszillator bezeichnet, da es den Van-der-Pol-Oszillator als Spezialfall fΓΌr a = b = 0 {\displaystyle a=b=0} enthΓ€lt.
